Summary

This article explains the BACKTRACK error message “[BACKTRACK App Name] Error loading external table: [path to table] …not a valid path…” and details how to fix the underlying problem that caused it to appear.

Explanation

During the customization of BACKTRACK, user can specify external table (DBF file) as source for data entry and/or validation.  This error occurs when the system cannot find the specified DBF file.

Solution

This error, most likely, occurs when there is a change in the system (new PC, network, server, etc.).

  1. If the software is being relocated to a new system, make sure to copy the DBF files from the old system (the path can vary).  You do not have to copy them to the same location.  In some cases, the same location may no longer exist (server retired, computer name changes, etc.).  You just need to make sure that the end user has access to the DBF files.
  2. Use Edit Item Structure and Edit Transaction Structure in Edit Application Options to view/modify all the ‘Relation’ information.  Modify them as necessary to the new environment
