Summary

This article explains the BACKTRACK error message “[App Name] Cannot load the file. Unknown file format.” and details how to fix the underlying problem that caused it to appear.

Explanation

This error occurs when BACKTRACK is trying to open a report that was created in a previous version.  BACKTRACK went through a major change when version 2012 was released.  The changes include a different Report Writer.  Any reports created prior to version 2012 had to be recreate as the new Report Writer cannot read the old report files.

Solution

All reports created in BACKTRACK v6 or earlier must be completely rewritten in the upgraded BACKTRACK.  The user must delete each of the reports that shows up on the list and then create new reports to replace them.  As far as we can tell, there is no way to transfer or recover them.
