Upgrade Wizard (UPGRADEWIZARD.EXE) Crashes During Upgrade or Activation – TEKLYNX Problem Article

Summary

User is unable to run TEKLYNX Software (CODESOFT, LABELVIEW, LABEL MATRIX). The program will crash when user tries to run it.  There are no specific error message given.

Situation and Symptoms

  • Upgrade or activation of software license using UPGRADEWIZARD.exe
  • The program will simply crash when run
  • User is able to run ‘repair’ on the software but the problem remains.
  • Windows System Event log – event 1000. Event 1000 is a generic event message. You have to look into the details of the event message to find that the program crashed.

Explanation

This problem is caused by Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) version 12.

Even if user disables SEP on the computer or whitelist the entire software folder, the problem remains.  This led to a incorrect conclusion that SEP is not the cause of the problem.

Solution

SEP needs to be uninstalled. This is probably not a real option for most people.

As of this writing, TEKLYNX is still working on the solution to this problem.
