Explanation

The following message appeared when a user tried to start TkxSvrService manually using the command line – SC start TkxSvrService.

[SC] StartService FAILED 14001:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

An internet search identifies the issue as a damaged .NET or Visual C++ installation and recommends that user reinstall or repair the software.

However, in the context of TEKLYNX CENTRAL, this may not be the actual cause. In the incident that lead to this article, there was a problem with the Tkx.TkxSvr.ServerService.exe.Config file. This file is typically located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Teklynx\TkxSvrServers folder. The user manually edited this file and the XML syntax was incorrect.

Solution

After the XML syntax was corrected, the service started normally without any further error messages.
