SQL Query Typos – SQL Server Problem

Summary

This article explains how to resolve the SQL Server problem of typos that prevent statement execution.

Symptoms

Often error messages in SQL generate from typos in the SQL statement. Long and complex queries are prone to small typos which will prevent the statement from executing.  The error messages can be difficult to interpret at times.

Explanation

Common typos seen:

  • Missing commas between elements of a SELECT clause of a SELECT statement
  • Incorrect field references in the FROM clause

Solution

Great care needs to be taken in writing the statement. This is especially true when using cut and paste to save time.
