Symptoms

The message ‘Object reference not set to an instance of an object’ appears after choosing Import operation in BACKTRACK.  The user encountered this problem after applying a software patch 2012.0.5.138 from TEKLYNX.

Explanation

This message is from Microsoft .NET platform. The problem is isolated to the TEKLYNX patch dated 05/06/15 which brings the version to 2012.0.5.138. You can only find the minor version by selecting Help > About then hover the mouse over the version number (the right most part).

Solution

The best solution is to move to an upgrade BACKTRACK.  Until TEKLYNX resolves this issue, you can restore the original files that were replaced by the patch. The files are:
